Gairloch Aid & Mobility Support
Memories of the past
On the afternoon of 3rd February, GAMS held their first outing of 2016.
This was a trip down memory lane, targeted at people who were brought up or lived for some time in the area from Melvaig to Red Point. Roslyn, one of the curators from the museum, provided old photos and artefacts. Everybody
enjoyed trying to identify houses and people in the old photographs as well as trying to guess what the artefacts were used for. Coffee, tea and cake were enjoyed by all. We hope to have many further events with the museum.
Visit to Inverewe Gardens
On Wednesday 25th May 2016 was the day GAMS chose for their fourth outing. In glorious sunshine, we enjoyed a gentle stroll through Inverewe Gardens, led by our very own guide, Kate Gunn, who drew our attention to many interesting facts on the way. The provision of wheelchairs as well as assistance enabled everyone to enjoy the outing at their own pace. We finished with a welcome cup of tea and cake in the Garden’s restaurant.
This outing will be a yearly event.
Watching the Sweep netting in the harbour
On 22nd June we watched Peter Cunningham and the Wester Ross Fisheries Trust Sweep Netting Team catching a variety of small fish. Peter explained a lot of interesting details, measured size and weight of the fish and checked on Sea lice. We were allowed to use the Sailing Club as a base, where we finished the outing with Tea/Coffee and cake and further discussion about nature.
We hope to have regular events with Peter Cunningham in the future.
Walking the Great Wilderness Challenge
In 2016 the Great Wilderness Challenge offered Limited Mobility Distances for the first time. We joined with a team of seven people, walking 1.4 or 2.8 miles. We offered several training walks to prepare the team to manage their distances.
Hopefully we will get more people involved in walking these distances. This activity provides excellent training which can lead to a more independent life.
Train trip from Achanalt to Kyle
On the 7th October we organised a train trip from Achanalt to Kyle of Lochalsh. After lunch in the Kyle Hotel, some took the chance to visit the shops while others had a look at the water front. The trainjourney to Kyle was in itself a highlight of the day, Everyone enjoying the stunning views which seemed to change round every corner.
Visit to the Howard Doris Centre
On the 21rst October 2016 we visited Howard Doris Centre in Loch Carron.
The Centre invited us to join their residents and day care patients for lunch.
During the afternoon we were entertained by Sandy Ross on accordion. Most hands and feet were tapping. Some people even had a little dance. We are now looking forward to a return visit from the Howard Doris group.
